What does it take to keep talking to the “enemy” when your societies are at war? Palestinian Sulaiman Khatib and Israeli Mia Biran of Combatants for Peace discuss what war does to society, why nonviolent conflict resolution still matters, and how trust can be rebuilt after it collapses. Moderated by Shpend Kursani.

What does it take to keep talking to the "enemy" when your two societies are at war? 🪖

Founded in 2006 by former Israeli and Palestinian combatants who chose to lay down their weapons, Combatants for Peace has since been nominated twice for the Nobel Peace Prize and has carried its message to the UN, to parliaments, and to policy forums worldwide.

The organization has kept Israelis and Palestinians working side by side even after 7 October 2023 and the war that followed - a period in which such partnership became not just difficult, but nearly unthinkable.

𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬, 𝐒𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐊𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐛 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐢𝐚 𝐁𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐧, will speak and share their experiences about why they believe in peaceful means to resolving conflicts at a time when violent means are becoming almost the first go-to option by actors in conflict, what changes in a society at war, how trust is rebuilt once it has collapsed, and what separates rhetoric about peace from the harder work of sustaining it.

🎤 Speakers:
🗣️ Sulaiman Khatib, Palestinian Co-founder and Director of International Relations (Combatants for Peace)
🗣️ Mia Biran, Israeli Program Manager (Combatants for Peace)
🗣️ The talk is moderated by Shpend Kursani, Lecturer in International Relations (University of Tartu)
The event will be held in English and is open to everyone
