Description
The latest electroacoustic music by composers from Estonia and beyond fills the vaults of St. John’s Church in Tartu. Spatial sound, electronics and recordings merge with the church’s unique acoustics, making the space itself part of the music.
The All Souls’ Night festival returns for its ninth edition: the latest electroacoustic music by composers from Estonia and beyond will fill the vaults of St. John’s Church in Tartu. The composers include both established and acclaimed figures in the genre as well as students and graduates of electroacoustic composition at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. Most of the works will receive their premieres and have been composed specifically for the All Souls’ Night festival and the acoustics of St. John’s Church in Tartu.
Electroacoustic music brings together spatial sound, electronics, pre-recorded sound material, and a specific time and space. St. John’s Church in Tartu becomes a unique part of the works themselves as well as the environment in which they are experienced.
Listeners are invited to experience the concert in whatever way feels most natural: reclining in a deck chair brought into the church especially for the evening, sitting in a traditional church pew, lying on their own mat on a pew or on the floor, or taking a meditative walk beneath the vaults of the church. The soundscape created by 21 loudspeakers placed throughout the space unfolds in a unique way in every part of the church. The tower of St. John’s Church will also be open for a late-night visit.
The All Souls’ Night festival takes place at St. John’s Church in Tartu every autumn, during the darkest time of the year around All Souls’ Day. The brightness of summer has faded, making way for mellow autumn evenings, while the luminous snow of winter has yet to arrive. It is a time to turn inwards, leave behind the rush and noise, and experience music and your own inner light.
