Some musical works seem to open a space in which music wanders along the boundary between the visible and the invisible worlds. Schubert’s Three Piano Pieces D 946 (1828), belonging to his late creative period, are the composer’s last major works for piano, combining remarkably rich harmony, imaginative form, lyricism, and unexpected dramatic contrasts. The Sonata in A minor D 537 was composed in 1817, when Schubert was only twenty years old. Even here, one can already hear the qualities that would later define his mature style.

Pianist Jorma Toots graduated from the Heino Eller Tartu Music School in the piano class of Pille Taniloo. At the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, his teachers were Prof. Lilian Semper and Prof. Matti Reimann. He is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, researching the possibilities of imitating orchestral colours in piano ensembles. Jorma teaches at the Eller Music School and is also a lecturer at the University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy. As a soloist and chamber musician, he performs regularly both in Estonia and abroad. Together with pianist Ebe Müntel, he forms the piano duo Ebe Müntel and Jorma Toots, which began its regular activity in 2004. In the same year, the duo reached the finals of the young performers’ competition Con Brio. During the 2008–2009 season, the duo successfully participated in piano duo competitions in Poland and the Czech Republic.
