BECOMING SOUND

for nonspeaker orchestra

Performed by Aivar Tõnso

Light design by Rene Manivald Tamm

‘’BECOMING SOUND’’ is a summary of Aivar Tõnso’s practices related to spatial sound and material-based sound synthesis, aiming to map his past work and give a concrete form to earlier experiments. As such, the performance includes the best motifs in an updated and processed form from past exhibitions and installations like “Lummafooria” (Luminaphoria), “Resomaatiline vaikelu” (Resomatic Still Life), “Graviteerivad allikad” (Gravitating Sources), “Heleaine tumeolek” (The Dark State of Bright Matter), and others.

Aivar Tõnso works with material-based sound synthesis, using various physical materials to amplify sounds and alter their character. In this way, he adds an acoustic layer to electronic sound while giving a new life to the materials. With their distinctive sculptural forms and timbres, they act like different instruments in a unified ensemble that Aivar calls the Unspeaker System (Ebakõlarisüsteem). “Helistumine” is a rich spatial soundscape created for the Unspeaker System, which is based on the acoustic properties of different materials and objects, allowing the listener to merge and identify with the sounds. It draws attention to the importance of listening culture in today’s noisy world and to sound’s ability to shape our experiences of space and environment.
