Description

On October 23, Contriber & Philly Joe's Tartu will host a concert by saxophonist and composer Toms Rudzinskis’ project ABYSS, featuring the live premiere of music from the group’s forthcoming second album. The international line-up brings together musicians from Latvia, Denmark, Ukraine and Estonia.

Formed in Berlin, ABYSS combines electro-acoustic sound with contemporary jazz composition. The music moves between tightly shaped compositions and open improvisation, driven by amplified textures, layered harmony and a strong rhythmic core.

“A leisurely and monumental opus… allowing you to dream and enjoy the power of a thick wall of sound.” – Europe Jazz Media Chart

The debut album ABYSS (2023) won Latvia’s national award for Best Jazz Album, received a Grand Music Award nomination and was featured on Jazz FM UK’s Full Circle.

The concert will feature music from the debut album alongside compositions from the forthcoming second record, recorded in September 2025 and due for release in autumn 2026. Ahead of its official release, the new material has already been presented live at Riga Music Week and Tallinn Music Week. The new programme takes the ABYSS sound into darker and more expansive territory, with a greater role for voice and electronics.

Toms Rudzinskis is a prominent Baltic saxophonist and composer and a graduate of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Active across the European jazz scene as a performer, composer and bandleader, he has developed a body of work spanning electro-acoustic and acoustic projects. Alongside ABYSS, his recent releases include Interception (2024), which received wide attention across Europe and national recognition in 2025.
